Divers Can't Save Man Who Crashed Car Into Potomac River Near Memorial Bridge (Developing)

One person is dead after taking a plunge into the Potomac River overnight near Memorial Bridge in DC, officials say.

First responders were called shortly after midnight to the water, where they found a car in the river with a person inside.

The man - who has not been identified by police - was pulled from the water and rushed to an area hospital, where he later died.

It is unclear what caused the fatal crash.

According to officials, the water rescue was an unprecedented collaboration between DC Fire / EMS and DC police divers.

More details are expected to be released.
